The success which has been achieved with the ZBE system in vertical drilling has inevitably resulted in a demand for adapting the system for precise drilling in a arbitrary direction. Therefor the SCOUT was designed for drilling in any direction and at an arbitrary inclination all the way to horizontal.

Functional Description

The SCOUT system thus maintains the target inclination and target direction (azimuth) exactly and continuously over the entire length of the borehole.

For solving this very difficult measuring and drilling problem the shaft of the tool, the housing and other important components were manufactured from non magnetic steel and a special triaxal magnetometer was designed. Furthermore a seperate electronic compensates magnetic interferences. This sensor system must ensure reliable operation under extremely severe drilling conditions - especially severe vibration and shock - and provide a reproducible directional accuracy. For achieving a specified borehole path, the target azimuth and the target inclination can be reprogrammed while drilling. This operating principle of a fully automatic system control with application of hydraulic steering and measuring sensor control directly behind the bit and centring of the SCOUT in the borehole makes it possible to produce a smooth curve path of the borehole referring to inclination and direction (azimuth).
